A Trip to the Park

Look what I found!
Today, my mom and I traveled to our local regional park to get information on hanging trail signs warning hikers about ticks and Lyme disease. They already had a sign to be aware of ticks, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes. If I knew nothing about Lyme disease, I think I would be most afraid of the mountain lion. I don't think I could outrun a mountain lion. So, I thought it would be a better idea to hang a separate sign on the other side so it would catch eyes a little bit better.
How about right here?
We ran into some workers and asked for advice on who to talk to for permission to hang our signs. He was very nice and told us to talk to Ranger Rex. Once we found Ranger Rex, he said it wasn't really up to him whether or not we could hang up the signs but once (or if) I got permission from the East Bay Regional Parks, I could hang them up. He gave me his business card for me to email the proposal and he will forward it to his bosses. How exciting, right? It was easier than I thought!

On another note, I purchased all of the supplies to make new door decorations for my residents for the Spring semester. I am so excited to make them, I know they'll come out cute! Overall, it was a very successful day. :)

Salvation Army Bell Ringing w/ the Miss Sonoma County Program

On Saturday, I participated in a bell ringing in Santa Rosa as part of the Miss Sonoma County court, which benefitted the Salvation Army. As you can see from the picture, it was really bright! The weather was a little odd. It wasn't too cold but during my three hours ringing the bell with Kaela, it rained twice but only for about 5 minutes at a time. But it poured!

The customers in front of Safeway were very generous. I tried not to look while they put money in the bucket, but some donated $20 bills. I was amazed by the generosity, especially in this economy. My favorite part was handing out candy canes to the children because I love children. The funniest part was when a mom brought her three young children to the store and you could see she was struggling a bit. Our chaperone, Tony, said, "It looks like you need some candy canes." and she exclaimed, "No! please, no! Do you hate us?!" and she smiled. I know I was giggling because my mom is a kindergarten teacher and I could relate to her not wanting to sugar up her kids.


When Christina arrived for her shift a little early, I immediately gave her the sash to wear since she had never done an appearance for the pageant and I wanted her to enjoy it for as long as she could. It is really fun representing such a wonderful organization, especially when you get to represent the Salvation Army as well! I was really happy to be a part of this event. I know people would have donated whether or not I was there, but maybe me smiling coaxed SOME people to donate! ;) The time flew by and I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Teaching Kids about Lyme Disease (post #2)


It's LYME TIME! :)
Hi everyone :) On Tuesday, I had an opportunity to teach another Lyme program. Unfortunately, I was feeling under the weather but I stuck to my commitment and taught the program anyway. It was really rewarding and fun to spend the day with such sweeties!

They had a good time spotting the ticks on the picture and learning about Timothy Tickfinder and his dog Bullseye. Plus, they love to color! I was surprised that such a large group of kindergarteners were so patient and attentive.

What a great class! In the end, I gave them all a certificate for completing the lesson and gave them a copy of the quiz we went over for their mommies and daddies to learn as well. I'm so thankful that I got to be in the company of such wonderful little children, I even started to feel a little less sick.

Pageant Paperwork

It's paperwork time! To some, the actually paperwork to apply to compete is one of the most stressful things about pageantry. There are specific rules and guidelines that you have to follow to make it look perfect. Plus, that's the first thing the judges see! It's your first "first impression". How nerve-wracking is that?! Okay, maybe I'm making you feel more stressed than you were before. Sorry! Here are some tips I have on completing your paperwork:

  • Just let it flow and then edit. Even if you feel that it's not good enough, you have plenty of resources to help you perfect it.
  • Make sure you edit CAREFULLY. I was reading my paperwork from last pageant year and I found a ton of mistakes. How could I let that much slide?
  • Know everything on your paperwork. At my last pageant, I asked a judge to repeat herself and I was called out for not knowing what I had written. I'll never make that mistake again, to say the least. 
  • Even if your paperwork isn't perfect, you can always prove yourself in interview. Yes, this is their first impression but this document is only a little sliver of you. It's hard to fit something you're passionate about on one page! Just make sure you don't repeat yourself too much.
  • Make sure you're ready to talk about anything on your paperwork. How did you end up getting that award? Well, you'd better find out!
I've learned a lot by competing, meaning I've learned from my mistakes. It's really easy to feel overwhelmed but you have so many resources. Your #1 supporter and helper is your executive director! I'm sure they'd be happy to read over your paperwork for you. They want to help every young woman shine and become the best version of herself. That's why I love this organization!

Busy, Busy Days!

Yesterday I attended the Miss Sonoma County Santa Breakfast which benefits the scholarship organization. It was a ton of fun to see a few familiar faces and meet some new ones! It was absolutely freezing outside so I was happy to spend the day indoors. My job was to sell raffle tickets and collect money with my dear friend, Christina. I think we did a great job! One of my favorite parts of the breakfast (besides when Snoopy came!!) was when I got to introduce myself on the microphone. Little things like that always get me excited. My parents even came to support me at the breakfast and they had a good time, too.

After the breakfast, I changed and then it was off to the Miss Solano orientation. I was really looking forward to meeting the wonderful Executive Directors of the Miss Solano and Miss Napa County scholarship pageants. They didn't disappoint! They were so welcoming and had a great powerpoint presentation that taught me a lot. Plus, their home was beautiful! I just wish I didn't have to leave so quickly. I am not sure if I have ever talked about my job, but I am a Community Services Advisor (CSA) here at my school. A CSA is basically a Resident Advisor, or RA, under a different name. I had to leave the orientation right away so I could be back on time to start my shift on call.

I also had a social program last night where my residents came for cookies and hot chocolate. We also had a contest. For every canned food or nonperishable food item you brought in, I would put your name into a raffle to win a $30 Target gift card. It was super successful and we collected a lot of food, which I will go donate this week. I was really proud of my residents for stepping up and being thoughtful citizens!

Now, today is just a recovery and catch up day before I start finals week tomorrow. Wish me luck! :)
